Links to federal government summaries and narratives of Canada’s Indian Residential Schools

Introduction

To assist researchers, we have integrated our identification of Indian Residential Schools that operated in Canada with our account of the federal government’s sporadic release of relevant documents.

The Table includes entries for 155 Indian Residential Schools as listed by the Truth and Reconcilation Commission (Final Report, Volume IV: Missing children and unmarked graves, Appendix 1.1 and Appendix 1.2, pp. 139-151) as well as Kivalliq Hall, Northwest Territories, which was added to the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement (IRSSA) by court order in 2019.

The Table associates these 156 Indian Residential Schools with 142 Single Page Summaries (in English and French) only released by the federal government and posted on the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation’s (NCTR) website this year.

The Table also associates these 156 Indian Residential Schools with 133 School Narratives that the federal government was obligated to prepare as part of the Individual Assessment Process under the IRSSA. Some of these School Narratives were only released by the federal government and posted on the NCTR’s website this year.

Calgary, Alberta. Identified in Indian Affairs annual reports, not included in the final IRSSA (op cit., p. 150). Back
Edmonton, Alberta. The original list of institutions covered by the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement (Schedule E) included a reference to “Edmonton (Poundmaker, replaced Red Deer Industrial”. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission noted “The [original] list. The Methodist school at Red Deer, Alberta, which closed in 1919, and the Methodist school in Edmonton, which opened in 1924, are listed as one school” (Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, Final Report, Volume IV: Missing children and unmarked graves, Appendix I: Canada’s residential schools, p. 139). The final list of institutions covered by the IRSSA made no mention of Red Deer; thus, there is no One Page Summary or School Narrative for this institution. Back

Sarcee, Alberta. Included in the original but not the final IRRSA. Back
Stony Plains, Alberta. Identified in Indian Affairs annual reports, not included in the final IRSSA (op cit., p. 150). Back

Metlakatla, British Columbia. Identified in Indian Affairs annual reports, not included in the final IRSSA (op cit., p. 150). Back
Yale, British Columbia. Identified in Indian Affairs annual reports, not included in the IRSSA (op cit., p. 150). Back
Cross Lake, Manitoba. Reportedly another school narrative is forthcoming for Cross Lake, presumably for the Notre Dame Hostel/Jack River Indian Residential School. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission collapsed the Cross Lake, Norway House, Notre Dame Hostel, and Jack River institutions into one Indian Residential School (op cit., p. 144). Back
Dauphin, Manitoba. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission noted “the Anglican school at The Pas, Manitoba, which closed in 1933, and the Anglican school in Dauphin, Manitoba, which opened in 1957, are listed as one school (in part because both were known as the ‘McKay school’ (op cit., p. 139).” We associated the school narrative for the “Mackay” institution with both the Dauphin and The Pas Indian Residential Schools. Back
Middlechurch, Manitoba. Identified in Indian Affairs annual reports, not included in the final IRSSA (op cit., p. 150). Back
St. Boniface, Manitoba. Identified in Indian Affairs annual reports, not included in the final IRSSA (op cit., p. 150). Back

Back

Kamsack/Fort Pelly, Saskatchewan. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission notes “There are separate listings [in the IRSSA] for Roman Catholic schools at Fort Pelly and Kamsack, Saskatchewan, although these appear to refer to the same institution” (op cit., p. 139). Altogether the federal government has published four one page summaries and four school narratives for institutions associated with Kamsack, Saskatchewan. Back
Muscowpetung, Saskatchewan. Identified in Indian Affairs annual reports, not included in the final IRSSA (op cit., p. 150). Back
Muskeg Lake, Saskatchewan. Identified in Indian Affairs annual reports, not included in the final IRSSA (op cit., p. 150). Back
Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Identified in Indian Affairs annual reports, not included in the final IRSSA (op cit., p. 151). Back
Standing Buffalo, Saskatchewan. Identified in Indian Affairs annual reports, not included in the final IRSSA (op cit., p. 151). Back
Sturgeon Landing, Saskatchewan. The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation outlines the potentially confusing connection between the Sturgeon Landing Indian Residential School in Saskatchewan and The Pas/Guy Hill Indian Residential School in Manitoba. “Predecessor to the Guy Hill Residential School at The Pas, the residential school at Sturgeon Landing began operation in 1926, although its official opening was not until 1927. During its history, the school saw out breaks of illness. The Sturgeon Landing school was destroyed by fire in 1952, and was not rebuilt. That fall, pupils and most of the staff were moved to facilities in The Pas where they remained until Guy Hill residential school was built on nearby Clearwater Lake in 1957.” The Truth and Reconciliation Commission associates separate Indian Residential Schools with Sturgeon Landing, Saskatchewan and The Pas/Guy Hill, Manitoba. The federal government has published separate two one page summaries and one school narrative for the Sturgeon Landing-The Pas/Guy Hill Indian Residential School(s). Back
