- Series consists of two volumes containing returns documenting settlement in the Newcastle District (the townships of Dummer, Duoro, Smith, Otonabee, Asphodel, Ennismore, Emily, Ops, Harvey, Belmont, Verulam and Fenelon, and the town of Peterborough) in the first half of the nineteenth century.
Volume RG 1-84-0-1 contains “Returns of locations of emigrant settlers from the south of Ireland under the Superintendence of the Hon. Peter Robinson in 1826”. The first portion of the volume contains returns listing: the names of the original settler; the township, concession, lot and acreage of the land located; and remarks often providing the name of the individual to whom the land was described (not necessarily the name of the locatee) and an order-in-council number. The second portion of the volume contains returns with entries grouped by township name. Information is entered under the following headings: date of location; lot, concession and acreage; occupant; and comments.
Although the returns in Volume RG 1-84-0-1 were prepared ca. 1836, there are subsequent additions and annotations to 1869.
Volume RG 1-84-0-1 contains an alphabetical listing to surnames.
Volume RG 1-84-0-2 contains “Returns of Mr. Alex. McDonnell for the Newcastle District, 1837.” Information is entered in the returns under the following headings: Date; Name; Occupation (e.g., Comm[issioned] pensioner; Perth Settler; Wilt[shire] settler; Disch[arged] marine; Glasgow settler; SUE (Son,United Empire Loyalist); DUE (Daughter, United Empire Loyalist); Whence from; Location (the lot, concession and acreage of the land involved); and remarks.
